Ned Lagin ‎
"Seastones"

CD, Rykodisc, 1990

Despite his lack of fame, Ned Lagin fits the classical definition
of a renaissance man - artist, photographer, composer, early computer
visionary, scientist, accomplished musician... perhaps best known as a
sound engineer and keyboardist for the Gratefull Dead during their early
70's heyday, Lagin is a pioneer of the use of micro and personal computers
in live studio and stage performance settings. This release processed the
source sounds of the GD along with fellow hippie legends David Crosby
and Grace Slick, amongst others, into a completely different sound world
only accessible by the technology Lagin was exploring and utilizing,
resulting in the most unlikely cast of musicians of a release featured
on the blog, ever, yet perfectly at home here. Wild. I encourage you
to read Lagin's wiki profile linked below, it's interesting stuff!

Roland Kovac ‎
"Computer"

LP, Selected Sound, 1980

A favorite "library music" release of mine covering all
sorts of strange solo synth territory that would foreshadow,
amongst other things (a good deal of this release sounds
like Emeralds), the dystopian detachment of IDM.

Kenneth Gaburo ‎
"Lingua II: Maledetto"

LP, CRI, 1974

Kenneth Gaburo (1926-1993) was an American composer best known
as a champion of compositional linguistics. His works focused primarily
on the voice and the musical qualities found in language. He established
a publishing company called Lingua Press that centered on language and
music in which he, amongst other things, experimented with electronic
music as a means to produce a more specific universal language. With
"Lingua II: Maledetto", his use of layered, non-processed voice sought
to do just that - having released treated vocal experiments previously,
this work rethinks and presents the voice in terms of its physiological
impact, acoustical qualities, and structural linguistical (words as sound)
meaning, the results being somewhat akin to non-treated Tape Music.

Vladimir Ussachevsky
& Otto Luening ‎
"Tape Music: An Historic Concert"

LP, Desto, 1968

1968 LP release of a 1952 Tape Music performance
(perhaps the first of its kind in the US?) at the Museum
Of Modern Art in New York. It was at this time that
John Cage was assembling what would become the
most famous Tape Music piece, Williams Mix, which
would make its first public performance in March of 1953.
Side b features modern classical compositions by Luening.

Rune Lindblad ‎
"Predestination"

LP, Proprius, 1975

Lindblad was a Swedish visual artist and an avant garde composer
whose involvement with the first public performance of musique concrete
in Sweden in 1957 lead to demands for refunds by the audience, and the
infamous review of the concert being "pure torture" by critics. This LP
was oddly released by a mostly religious oriented label, which might
explain the title and confusing cover art ("modern" music was a bit of a
trend by this point, so it's little wonder even the church set were attempting
to make some money from it... one can only wonder what the regular
audience of this labels releases thought when they first heard it, though...).
This release is comprised solely of minimal synthesizer workouts ranging
between stripped back Kosmisch squelch fests and icy drone pieces, most
of which would sound perfectly at home on a diy nu new age cassette
release of the past 10 years, or so. Thanks to the mighty and sorely missed
Mutant Sounds blog where this was found several years ago.

John Cage
& Lejarlen Hiller
"HPSCHD"

File, Issue Project Room, 2014

"HPSCHD, John Cage and Lejaren HIller’s legendary Gesamtkunstwerk is a mass media orgy, considered by many as the wildest, largest, and loudest musical composition of the 20th century. In this conversation, David Weinstein hosts three participants in the 2013 restaging in New York: composer/curator Nick Hallett, filmmaker Bradley Eros, and Cage collaborator/composer Joel Chadabe, along with Cage specialist/composer Ron Kuivila. The program is interspersed with excerpts from a production of HPSCHD at the Ontario College of Art & Design, Toronto, June 11, 2008."
